Buying Native American Art – Do's and Dont's

Whether you’re drawn to the beauty of kachina dolls, sand paintings and jewelry or the eye catching colors of woven rugs, story tellers and pottery craft; having a little understanding about the American arts and crafts can help you make the most of your money.

As the native American art usually commands higher prices, some unscrupulous traders misrepresent imitation art and craft products as authentic. If you are considering to buy a piece of Native American art, here are some do's and dont's that will help you make an informed buying decision.

Do's

Always prefer to buy the native American arts and craft products directly from the artists, galleries or at special shows. Attend seminars and functions, which draw native American artists and talk to them. Learn about the artists and their area of specialization.

Know what designs or products make a particular art piece well constructed and beautiful. It is important to understand the different types of art forms and what makes one art piece better than others. Research, research, research.

Do everything you can to check the authenticity of a particular art piece. Check out who the designer is and about him/her.

Purchase the artworks from a reputed dealer who has a association with the artist. Ask if you can return the artwork if you do not like it.

Learn about the law regarding sale and purchase of native American arts and craft products.

Dont's

Buy an art piece if you don't like it.

Feel that you will always have to spend big money to buy native American arts and crafts. There are some lesser known artists who create posters and more mass-produced items like nice gifts and decorations at much lesser prices. It is up to you whether you spend $35 or $35000 for a oil painting or a bronze statue. Know what the purpose of your purchase is?

Be afraid about asking questions. If a trader is selling native American artwork, he should disclose the authenticity of what he is offering. Genuine native American artwork can be identified with the Trademark of artist.

Hesitate to contact the artist to verify the authenticity of the artwork you are considering buying.

Believe on everything that you read on the Internet or are told by a sales person. There are many good books available in the market that you can use to enhance your knowledge about the native American arts and craft.

Where painting is concerned, black and white are NOT colors. In fact, white is considered the absence of all color (which is why you can put white with any color at all) and black is the mixture of all colors (which is why is works well with any color).

Now I could sit here and tell you a whole bunch of colors that would work well but supposing I said green, and you HATE green, then you wouldn't be happy with my answer and I wouldn't have helped you out... which is my mission here on Yahoo Answers! So let's get back to basics.

What you want is your art to be the focus in the room. So keep the frames consistent. Use the same color frame for each work of art where possible. This will bring the focus to the art and not the frames.

As for wall color, since anything matches black and white, I highly suggest you choose an object that will be in the same room (curtains, cushions, furniture, decorative objects, rugs, etc.) basically, you can choose anything in the room that you really like. Choose a color that is in that object and use that color. You can even take the object to a store where they color paint and they can scan the object to find the EXACT match and recipe for the color.

Keep in mind that color is also psychological... really! The direction your room faces will have an impact on your color choice. For instance, if your room faces south, you won't want to put a warm color (such as red) on the walls, as you will feel hot and suffocated in the summer months. Place warm colors in North facing rooms. The same holds true for the opposite: If your room is facing North, you won't want to put a cold color on the walls (such as icicle blue) as in the winter months, you will feel chilled and uncomfortable in the room.

I know many people here have suggested putting red on the walls.... if you do so, choose a complex red color (a complex color will have 2 names or more in the description name of the color... such as cranberry red as opposed to just plain red). Choosing a complex color will ensure that the color is rich, textured and will have depth, which in turn will not let the paint color SCREAM at you... By the way, in my humble opinion, you may find black, red & white very stark... and ordinary to say the least.

Another important factor in choosing a color is the mood you want achieve in the room. If you are looking for a vibrant, exiciting & adrenaline pumped room, definitely go with red, lime green, hot pink or a new pumpkin orange... but if you are looking for a space that is relaxing, soothing and conducive to unwinding, then you should opt for soft pinks, soft olive greens or hot chocolate milk beiges. If you are looking for a Zen feeling to your room, you'll want to opt for bamboo greens, caribbean ocean turquoises, or soft dried bamboo beiges. Even consider using a beigy (not yellow beige!) bamboo wallpaper with a discreet and very small visual bamboo texture... this would look amazing and convey major Zen! If you're looking to portray a country-like feel to the room, definitely opt for the lilac, soft custard cream yellow or new spring leaf green family... Do you have flowered or chintz-covered furniture? If you do, then choose a pastel color in the object to run with to shout out "I love the country feel!". If your furniture is neutral, it's always easier to ReDesign a room... It all depends on what mood your furniture gives off... After all, unless you're planning on replacing your furniture, this is what you have to work with.

Personally, if I had to choose black & white artwork to flow with, in my perception (and here on Yahoo Answers, it's all about perception!), what comes to mind is black & white artwork, most likely photo prints of beautiful waterfalls from around the world and I would opt to flow Zen. I'd wallpaper like I said above. I'd choose a wall, at most 2, with a trendy, small textured bamboo-like wallpaper in a neutral wet sand color, I'd use dark ebony-brown (almost black) furniture in clean lines, add some metals (I'd opt for a brushed, satin finish) somewhere (in the lamps, a vase, a fountain, etc.) add a touch of red somewhere (more than likely in an amaryllis plant that has a rich sunset-red flower instead of a cushion), throw a natural fiber accent rug somewhere, paint the other 2 or three walls either the dominant neutral color of the wallpaper or go a bit funky and use the Caribbean ocean turquoise and balance the turquoise with another element in the room, opting to aim for 3 shades lighter of the same turquoise. That might be by using one (and only one!) other item, either a piece of art with turquoise in it, the curtains or a turquoise color in the visual texture of the curtains or perhaps something smaller, such as coasters or a vase. I would definitely aim for the minimalist feeling in the room...

Obviously, what mood you want to portray also depends on the furniture you have, unless you are prepared to replace the furniture... I'm a firm believer that we don't have to live in a disposable society... If your furniture is still in good condition, then hold on to it for now... there's most definitely a way to work with it and that's what ReDesign is all about!

Whatever you decide to do, keep in mind that to have complete color harmony in any room, there must be 3 colors... And I repeat, since black & white ARE NOT colors, you're right to add to your theme... So choose 3 colors that make you happy, make you smile, laugh, relax or get pumped up... whatever you're aiming for! Make yourself happy! Oh... and know that it's very important to have black in each and every room, no matter what the black is. Black is the base that grounds the whole design together, as it contains each and every color you've included in your room.
