i'm making a ceramic funeral urn. what kind of seal do i need for the lid?

Depends. Most cremated persons are just put in a plastic bag and then a box and it is sealed with a couple of stickers. You don't have to have a seal, per se, but if you need to have one, I would use glue of some sort. That way it won't spill the contents.
