What difference is there between using a baking dish (ceramic) and baking tray (metal)?
I am slowly, slowly starting to add things to my kitchen. Lately I have been making things that in the recipe say to use a baking dish, however I have just been using a metal baking tray instead, it still seems to turn out fine. The last thing I made was a lasagne, it turned out fine being cooked in the metal tray. Tonight I have pasta bake in the oven, in the metal tray as usual, and I hope it turns out well. But I remember my mum always used the ones that were ceramic, what are the benefits to this? Should I invest in one, is there any reason why I shouldn't use the metal ones for meals like this? I figured the difference might be that the meal would burn more easily in a metal tray, but my meals haven't had that happen at all so I'm not sure now.
A baking dish is a dish you would use to bake a cake, pasta or a casserole in. They are usually 9x13 inches. They can also be glass (Pyrex) ceramic or metal. The ceramic ones conduct the heat better, the glass ones require less cooking time, and the metal ones (if it is dark metal) take longer. I have one of each. A glass one which I use most often because I can see what's going on in there! I have a ceramic one which I like to use for baked pasta or chicken or a roast, and a metal one which I use the least.
And to my knowledge:
A baking tray is also called a cookie sheet or it could be a jelly roll pan or a pizza pan. I use my baking tray for making cookies, oven fries, pizza. Some baking trays have no sides to them.
hope this helps!
