Has anyone made masks using non-polymer clay?
I am about to undertake a class that instructs students about using pottery materials to make masks. I do not want to use polymer clay as glazing techniques used on fired hand-thrown pots will produce the type of appearance I want to achieve. As I understand it, this will not happen using polymer clay because its basic ingredient is plastic and the colors applied are the colors you get, even when fired. Has anyone done this kind of modeling and if so, any advice to offer?
with non-polymer clay I assume you mean normal water based clay which has to be fired at a temperature between 1200F-2200F.
If you want to teach it as a class you first need to figure out the available equipment and expertise you have available.
- Do you have access to a kiln? Can you run the kiln yourself or would you need somebody to run it for you? Is somebody available to run it for you, and are they free or would they charge you/your class for their time?
- What is the firing cost? Will it make the class more expensive?
- Do you have the experience of working with water based clay and glazes? Do you have the time to acquire the experience? Especially for the glazes your class will benefit if you can provide them with fired tests so they know how the glazes will look like. Also you need to research the cost and toxicity of the glazes you want to use and what type of glaze to use. There are high-fire and low-fire glazes. There are more effect glazes available for low-fire glazes, so you probably will prefer those. Which means that you also need to chose a matching clay body - not all clays vitrify at the temperatures for low-fire glazes.
Do you have to order clay and glazes or is a local supplier available? Can you buy some from the stock of a local school/university/college?
Is there somebody with experience you can ask for help with troubleshooting?
If you have somebody experienced to go to, it probably takes one or 2 afternoons to teach you most you need to know if you have general experience with hand building.
Start now to collect images from ceramic masks to show your students examples for inspiration. I also would look up the variety of masks in different cultures and their meanings.
