How do I get scratches off stoneware dishes?

Where I used to work we always recommended ZUD cleaning powder (should be with the Ajax, Comet, etc in the cleaning aisle of your local grocery store).
Reglazing is expensive, so try the cheap route first with the zud. Keep in mind that stoneware is the least durable of china as the material is much more porous than fine, porcelain or bone china.
If your plates or other items become chipped, discard them because bacteria can build up inside the crack. I have also seen problems with the plates bursting in the microwave because once water gets inside the crack, the heat created by microwaving makes steam and cracks the plate further.
