How to get our 4 year old springer to like a new dog?
I recently found a stray staffordshire bull terrier (nobody has calmed him and he was 4 kilos underweight) and took him home to meet my english springer spaniel, at first they got along fine but when the staffie comes to sit by me or trys to play with the toys the springer starts to fight him. is this a "top dog" thing, if so how can i stop it?
delicate question........we had a 6 yr. old neutered male when we brought a 3 month old female home last yr. , we thought he would love having another dog to play with but he was used to having us all to himself. Some of the things we did.........yes, some of the things he's doing is to make sure he remains the "alpha male".....the top dog, of the house. We made sure to do everything with the older dog first....like feeding, letting them outside, letting them out of their kennels, etc. We try to remember he's first. It helps. He growls when he plays with her but he's learned to drop the toy she wants because she's bigger. I try to always get two of everything in toys! The still go for whatever the other one has, but, at least I can tell him....look there's another one, go get it! I dont know what to do if they actually fight over the toy and no one wants to give it up.
Give it some time, they will probably learn to get along just fine. To keep them from hurting each other in a fight, I guess I'd get an extra toy out for the other one or sit on the floor and play with both of them with a couple of toys to show you are giving "equal time". Hope some of this was helpful.
