Why did they turn my Yahoo Avatar into a smiley face?

It used to be a nice grey silhouette, but now its a grey smiley face...

I'm not complaining I just wanna know.

I heard that this new "smiley face avatar" is showing up because Yahoo! is planning to use users' Yahoo! Profiles pictures instead of Yahoo! Avatars or Yahoo! 360º pictures. A user who has no Yahoo! Profile picture will have this smiley face in all his/her accounts of different Yahoo! services including Yahoo! Answers.
