Food for Thought! A daily dose of history, Where did it Originate?`,?
1686
The Moslem Ottoman (Turkish) army has been victoriously advancing from the East and has succeeded in conquering a vast expanse of territory in South East Europe. Now it has reached the outskirts of Budapest. To reach the center of the city, the Turks are digging underground passages. Bakers, working during the night, hear the noise made by the Turks and give the alarm. The assailants are repulsed and to highlight it's defeat, the bakers produce, as a totally novel line, a roll of flaky pastry made of pounded almonds and sugar shaped in the form of a crescent, which is the emblem of Islam. It enables the rejoicing Budapest citizens literally to devour with relish the very symbol of their enemy.
1688
Though the Turks were forced to retreat, the edible croissant-like crescent is advancing further west, and has reached France.
not to be negative, wasn’t it the weather that actually turned back old Ghengis? He made such advances several times but never managed to get past Hungry because the winter snows triggered something in his mind that screamed…get back home. I can’t imagine that he feared snow since his part of Mongolia got plenty of it.
It is not unusual for modern humans to take credit for that which they did not achieve! So, we can forgive the Hungarians for this typical indulgence.
I once successfully confronted Arnold Schwarzenegger in a Gasthaus bar although, if memory serves, he had left about an hour before I arrived!
