Do charged particles actually follow along set field lines?

So - in an electric field, will charged particles follow a particular path? Like, when one draws in field lines, will a particle follow "those" lines? Or are there an infinite amount of field lines produced and we just draw those lines in for sake of argument kinda thing? It sounds kinda trivial and I probably look kinda dumb but - it got me thinking...

Field lines are not exact and are used as a visual aid. Typically, they are used just to get a sense of the field density and flux. That is, they show which way the field is 'flowing' and how strong it is at a given point. The number of lines per unit area represents the density of the field and when drawn accurately can only start at a point charge (particle.) The lines don't actually exist. Charged particles in a field don't follow any specific line except under special circumstances.

Simply put; you draw the lines as a reference to make some problems easier (and some significantly more difficult.)
