ISTQB Certification Overview

ISTQB in not a new term for software testers. But still, many people are quite confused about the ISTQB certification exam. Most of the aspirants have questions like – How do I become ISTQB certified? What is the pattern of Exam? Etc. I will try to cover as much as possible in this writing.

Let me start with a little background about ISTQB. The ISTQB was originally founded as an International Testing Qualifications Board in Edinburgh in November 2002. The ISTQB-International Software Testing Qualifications Board is responsible for the international qualification scheme called "ISTQB Certified Tester". The qualifications are based on a syllabus, and there is a hierarchy of qualifications and guidelines for accreditation and examination. The certification in recognized worldwide.

The ISTQB Certified Tester program provides certification for software testers at international level. The list of participating countries can be viewed at http://www.istqb.org/members.php . At present there are two levels of certification:-

The Foundation Level certificate – valid for life time
The Advanced Level certificate -- (As per Ver. 2007 Syllabus) is valid for life time.

The aspirant need to go to the respective site of the country to register for the exam. Next thing the aspirant need to make sure is that he/she downloads the syllabus and the glossary. Syllabus is updated frequently; therefore the aspirant must make sure that he/she downloads the fresh syllabus available on the respective site or at http://www.istqb.org/download.htm. There are n number of books and training material available in the market. But one must ensure that he/she goes through the syllabus provided by ISTQB in detail.

Coming to the pattern of exam, The Foundation Level exam consists of approximately 40 multiple choice questions of 1 point each. An exam amounts to 40 points total, of which 65 %( 26 points) must be attained in order to pass. The exam is a closed book exam. The aspirant have 75 minutes (earlier it was 90 minutes) to finish. One good thing is that there is no negative marking. New questions are constantly being developed by the members of all national boards and the various working parties. Thus it is very rare that the same questions are repeated at different exam dates.

If the aspirant completely covers the syllabus, he/she doesn’t need any additional training. The questions are classified at different levels. While there may be some direct questions based on definition, there will be some for which the scenario must be understood in order to answer them.

One certified, the tester can use the logo on their resume based on the level of certification cleared.
