Nippon Vase

Opaline glass

Opaline glass is a decorative style of glass made in France from 1800 to the 1890s, though it reached its peak of popularity during the reign of Napoleon III in the 1850s and 1860s. The glass is opaque or slightly translucent, and can appear either white or brightly colored in shades of green, blue, pink, black, lavender and yellow. The glass has a high lead content which defined it as "demi-crystal" or semi-crystal. The primary influences on this style of glass were 16th century Venetian milk glass, and English white glass produced in 18th century Bristol.

Many different pieces were produced in opaline glass, including vases, bowls, cups, coupes, decanters, perfume bottles, boxes, clocks and other implements. The popularity of Opaline glass began during the reign of Napoleon. Cities involved in the production included Le Creusot, Baccarat, and Saint-Louis, Runion, as well as various locations in England.

All opaline glass is hand-blown and has a rough or polished pontil on the bottom. There are no seams and no machine engraving. Many pieces of opaline glass are decorated with gilding. Some with handpainted flowers or birds. Several have bronze ormolu mounts, rims, hinges or holders. Real opaline glass was produced only in France. In the 1900s Italy produced a similar glass and called it opaline veritable.

Most all opaline glass is not branded or signed.

Portieux Vallerysthal made lots of robin's egg blue glass they call Opaline. This was produced later and in much greater quantity and is not nearly as rare or valuable.

The two best references for French Opaline Glass are Les Opalines by Christine Vincendeau and Lpaline franaise au XIXe sicle by Yolande Amic. Both are in French.

Antique vase?

Nippon, 15 1/2" tall,Letters ESO in a heart, handpainted. Vase has two handles with painted roses and a trim between handles of flowers and leaves. All trimmed in gold and painted Light Green base. This vase may be over 100 years old. Belonged to an aunt's mother (aunt being 94)

It was made for export to the North American market between 1891 and 1921.

In 1890, the American McKinley tariff law decreed that all goods made for export to the U.S. had to be marked with the country of origin.
Japan at this time chose to use the word Nippon. In 1921, the U.S. government decided Nippon was no longer acceptable. From then on, goods were marked Japan.

This provides today's Japanese porcelain collector with an easy dating guide.

A statement that the appraiser cannot act as an advocate or negotiator in disputes over appraised goods.
Once you can establish the history of your pieces and they have been authenticated, i do not believe that you will have any problems selling them at any of the best of the above Auction Houses. The historical aspect of these sort of things can far exceed the normal and nominal fees usually obtained, unless of course they are also from an important maker,artist etc.
If you have the time, you could also go to your local library and select a few different books. There are several available and you'll be able to compare information and prices.
Go to the book store in the antiques section. I often find books that help in identifying the piece, style and maker.
