The Mountain Of Portugal
It is also rough country though, freezing in winter and burning in sum¬mer, and the neatly terraced mountainsides of the Upper Douro are a tribute to the tenacity of the people in making such harsh land work for them.
It's in this region you'll find Portugal at its most basic, carrying on a simple agricultural routine which is great if you like to get off the beaten track, but not somewhere to consider if you're looking for anything more than this.
What to see in Bragana. The Bragancas were the royal house of Portugal from the Restoration in 1640 till the abolition of the monarchy in 1910. Catherine of Braganca married Charles II and is supposed to be responsible for introducing the custom of afternoon tea to Britain. Braganca today is an attractive place, preserving its medieval ramparts and a wonderful old town hall from the twelfth century, but despite its contribution to Portuguese history offers little else.
Chaves. Little spa town in a valley a real contrast to the forbidding mountain scenery all around. It is noted for its hams, its spectacular Roman bridge, and its castle it was in former times an important frontier stronghold.
Miranda do Douro. A remote frontier town whose inhabitants (all 2,000 of them) speak a separate dialect of Portuguese It's a pretty little place, looking out from its medieval walls over the Douro river and a huge hydro¬electric dam. Vila Real. Provincial capital noted for its black pottery, and more especially for the Solar de Mateus the pinnacled baroque mansion that appears on every bottle of Mateus Rose.
It's here that the wine is made, and it's possible to visit the house and gardens for a small fee. Regua. Busy provincial town on the Douro and an important rail crossroads Lamego. Prosperous little agricultural town producing raposeira Portugal's' champagne' Nearby is the sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remedios an elaborate stairway.
Caramulo. Centre for the surrounding Serra do Caramulo, where there's good climbing and walking. It has two great museums. Viseu. The most notable town in the region with quite a lot to offer It's basically a medieval city its cathedral is sixteenth century on a Romanesque base and today is important as an agricultural centre, most especially for the Dao wines produced locally. In the sixteenth century an important Portuguese school of painting flourished in Viseu, led by Grao Vasco, whose works can be seen in the museum of the same name Guarda. The highest town in Portugal at over 3,000 feet good views but rather windswept.
Serra da Estrela. Portugal's highest mountain range, with some stunning views, some good local sheep's cheese, and even a ski resort. Covilha. Good base for exploring the Serra and quite a sizeable town. Castelo Branco. Capital of Beira Baixa, where the mountains subside into the flat plains of the Alentejo. The town is known for its beautiful embroid¬ered bedspreads and its agricultural produce. The former Bishops' Palace (containing a museum) and gardens is its major attraction.
