Horribles Figure

Desire like a Baskervilles dog!
It is not known who has created this witty and precise saying – „I desire like a Baskerville dog!” Almost everybody knows that there is nothing to do with a horrible dog from the novel of Arthur Conan Doyle „The Hound of the Baskervilles”. And it is also known that this huge animal didn’t have any romantic purposes or relations with Scherloc Holmes, Dr. Watson and not even with Miss Stapleton. The key word here is – Desire! ...
The figurative meaning of the saying is a desire - a huge and terribly difficult to dismiss. Exactly such can sometimes overtake us! Surely, we can use another saying, like – „I desire so much as if to tie up!” But it’s not so figurative comparison, besides it might sound too painful or impossible for some.
Such desire can sneak up not even knowing it and sometimes, it’s not the right time. Others can only wonder why there is such a suspicious sheen in your eyes and in every talks some piquant "ideas" appear. In your mind something a bit brute creeps in. Not bestial but brutishly strong, mighty as Baskerville dog. No wonder that other attractive people nearby might have suspicions that you could eat them up with your eyes. They really smell that mighty spirit of a Baskerville dog inside you. Not always it should be so but sometimes it is advisable for it to rest till the evening. It’s tragicomic that the most effective way of frightening away this inner „wanting Baskerville dog’ is to start thinking of, for example, economical crisis or running credit payments. At that time even the biggest Baskerville dog quickly runs away whining, its tail between the legs. This recipe is useful only for those who want too much at the wrong time. Postmen who meet the real dogs on their way advisably should not be teased by lectures about crisis. It’s not also worth mentioning the banks. Then might happen that both - a dog and its owner will run after you.
The saying „I desire like a Baskerville dog” is figurative, but sometimes not a very precise. There are cases when a desire can be compared with the thirst for water, that you have been travelling in the desert for many days. At such moments you need to be particularly careful because seeing a chance to get something to drink the common sense and precaution might inexcusably disappear. The instincts gain advantage over the mind and it happens to be madly mistaken. It is still rather extreme situation which luckily we do not meet very often. The main thing is to remember and be very careful.
It must be admitted that our inner Baskerville dog is imaginative and sometimes also naughty. It might sneak up also when you are alone too far away from home. Especially during longer journeys. Everybody has his own recipe how to cope with it but sometimes it happens to make such jokes that dogs’ yowling at the full moon comparing with it might seem just a mere trifle.
Still the most important – never try your inner Baskerville dog turn into the trained white poodle.
Have a nice Day and be careful,
