Overqualified with 1 year Employment Gap?

This year long gap is killing my career! I tell prospective employers briefly that I cared for my ill father and that seems to make everything worse. Before this, I was in a management position and ran my own pottery business which has made me overqualified or people raise their eyebrows in disbelief because I look so young. I am so eager to get back to work. Any ideas on how to handle this dilemma?

An illness forced me to leave the workforce for two years. I got fed up with trying to explain the truth so I went into an employment agency and asked them to place me anywhere in my field even if it was for one lousy week. The assignments became longer and the questions far less. When I got hired permanently, they did not even bother to ask about the gap.
