Top Green Title for Lancashire Furniture Manufacturer

One of Britain’s longest established furniture manufacturers, based in Lancashire’s Forest of Bowland, can officially lay claim to being among the country’s top green businesses, after securing a double victory in a prestigious awards programme.

HJ Berry Ltd took the ‘Best Manufacturing Company’ title at the Green Business Awards, held at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel.

Judges were so taken by the company’s commitment to sustainability that they also awarded them their prestigious ‘Best Small or Medium Enterprise (SME)’ accolade.

The company, formed in 1840, is a model of good environmental practice. Initiatives include planting their own woodland of more than 20,000 trees on the factory site – based in the picturesque village of Chipping - which will be ready to make furniture in 70 years’ time.

Offcuts of wood from the manufacturing process heat the factory and wood used for furniture is almost exclusively sourced from sustainable forests in the UK. Staff benefits include low-cost homes in the village for rent.

John Woodruffe, managing director of HJ Berry, said: “For us sustainability makes sense.

“By buying British, suppliers are not being stung by the poor Euro rate or paying high shipping fees to get stock in from overseas.

“They are also not getting a shipping container from China, containing broken or damaged goods, which they then have to send back.

“The quality of work is here, its evident, the price is competitive and British jobs and a whole way of life that has been in tune with the environment for well over one hundred years is being preserved.”

More than 130 companies entered the Green Business Awards, whose sponsors included CNN.

A spokesman from The Green Business Awards, said: “For a company with only 85 staff, HJ Berry has developed a remarkably holistic approach to sustainability.

“The company is committed to creating a positive contribution environmentally, socially and economically.

“At every level, they are turning this commitment into practical initiatives. Also striking is that, as well as short-term goals, HJ Berry has an ambitious long-term vision to become a truly sustainable green business.”

As well as success at The Green Business Awards, HJ Berry also topped off a productive week with the presentation of a Green Apple Gold Award for environmental excellence – one of a handful of companies in the UK to achieve the standard. Representatives from the company received the award at the Houses of Parliament.

HJ Berry is believed to be the oldest chair manufacturer in the country. Part of its factory in Chipping is based within a mill once used by industrial magnate, Sir Richard Arkwright.

The site still retains a waterwheel, which powered the plant up to the 20th century.
