Looking after Wildlife During Winter

Not many of us look forward to the winter months. The darkness and cold can make us feel quite melancholy, and at least we have Christmas to keep us cheery. However, winter can be real a struggle for the local wildlife in our gardens.

Our local wildlife has taken a battering of late. Whether its due to global warming or other environment problems there has been a drastic decline of many key species such as bumblebees, and it is winter where they will struggle the most.

With the snow on the ground and a shortage of flowers, berries and plants, food becomes scarce in the winter for those animals and birds that are unable to migrate or hibernate. It can take years for a species to recover from a particularly bad winter and as many are at risk already with declining numbers, it could be devastating for some local species.

Fortunately we can help. There are a large selection of feeders and wildlife houses out there. From house martin and swallow nesting bowls and other bird boxes; houses for frogs and toads houses bat boxes, hedgehogs homes, bumblebee nesting nesters; to numerous bird feeders and tables, there is much we can do to lend a hand.

And we don’t need a huge back garden either Many bird feeders and wildlife boxes can be used on lawns, flowerbeds, window boxes, planter and even patios. Some are really fantastic looking too and can help brighten the dullest garden. From really vivid flowerbed bird feeders to ceramic bumblebee nesters, ornamental hedgehog houses and rustic bird tables, there is something to suit any garden.

They even make great Christmas presents too, and it can feel doubly great knowing that you have not only found the perfect gift for that hard to please relative but also you are helping the environment in the process.

How do I get rid of my pond?

We have a pond with what looks lke a black PVC liner. It was there when we moved in, is overgrown and next doors cats keep half eating the frogs that come to the pond. Plus, we're thinking about kids so it would be much safer to get rid. Can we just puncture the liner and let the water drain away? We don't think there are fish in it but don't want to kill any frogs/tadpoles/frogspawn that may be in the pond. It has to go and we can't find advice anywhere!! We have brick planters (very 1980s!!) that we want to smash up and use to fill the pond in, then fill the gaps between these bricks etc. with sand and ultimately grass or decking or something. Will this work - are there websites anyone knows of that would help etc? Any advice is greatly received!!

If you tear holes in the black liner depending on what your soil is like the water should drain down.It may take awhile unless you have sandy soil.
