Film Review: Robocop 3
Having crafted the cult favorites Night of the Creeps and The Monster Squad, writer/director Fred Dekker decided to try his hand at a franchise that he hadn’t started. He decided to re-write Frank Miller’s original screenplay to fit his own tastes and thus RoboCop 3 was born.
Coming three years after the last film this film is even more a comic book oddity then the last film. In this new world of Old Detroit OCP is moving everyone out to make way for the construction of New Detroit. The Old Man (Dan O’ Herlihy) is no where to be found and the corporation is now managed by The CEO (Rip Torn) who is in conflict with the Kanemitsu Corporation who wants nothing to stop the progression of New Detroit. RoboCop returns as a force to maintain the status quo as people are forced out of their homes and rebels abound everywhere. When Nikko (Remy Ryan Hernandez) is separated from her parents during an OCP sponsored raid on the city she takes up residence with Bertha (CHH Pounder) and her resistance. Soon RoboCop gets stuck in the middle of the conflict and begins to wonder whether he’s on the right side of the law. When his partner Anne Lewis (Nancy Allen) is killed in a raid protecting innocent bystanders RoboCop decides to take a stand against OCP and the destruction of Old Detroit. This will be RoboCop’s most personal adventure as once & for all the conflict between the police force & Old Detroit and OCP & New Detroit will come to an end.
Although this film tries to end the trilogy and all the story threads spread through the films, the film itself suffers from the “television movie of the week” mentality and suffers from sub-par special effects. Actor Peter Weller’s absence is greatly missed as he has been replaced by Robert John Burke who doesn’t do the character justice It also doesn’t help that Nancy Allen’s Officer Anne Lewis is quickly killed leaving the film to rely on a smart young kid and a bunch of rebels to carry the film, which they cannot. Although Felton Perry does return for the third time in this film as Donald Johnson, the second in command of OCP, his presence can’t save this boat from sinking.
Of note is the return of Basil Poledouris who once again provides an original score and the film looks good with the help of cinematographer Gary B. Kibbe, who created the look for all of director John Carpenter’s films since 1987s Prince of Darkness.
