How do bread turn moldy in a airtight container?

Jim left two pieces of bread in two identical jars, X and Y. A few drops of water were added to the bread in jar X only. He covered the jars to make them airtight. The results of the experiment after three days. Jar X --> bread is mouldy , Jar Y --> bread is slightly mouldy

Jim made the jars airtight. How does this make the experiment a fair test?

The moisture in Jar X helped to propogate the growth of mold on the bread because it helped give them the right type of environment in order for mold to grow.

Even if the container is airtight (or you think it is), it is not completely airtight because of the air that is trapped inside of the container when you closed it and sealed it. That small amount of air is enough to cause the propogation of a set amout of mold, but less than in Jar X because of the smaller quantity of air.
