Corn Cob

How You can Grow Corn
Growing corn interests many people, however it is a tough job and not something for everone. It involves a tremendous amount of quality time and lots of learning and skill to actually master the skills of raising healthy and hardy corn. Corn grows best in warm climates and when grown where it rains a lot.
When you start growing corn, you need to choose the appropriate spot. It’s important that the soil for the corn is wind sheltered, exposed to a strong beam of direct lightt, has good drainage and sufficient humus that will ensure that the ground will not dry off quickly in hot climatic conditions. The top layer of the soil must necessarily be fertile and slightly acidic too.
Once the soil is raked in with enough supplements and fertilizers for reaping a healthy crop, the next step involves sowing the seeds and it is generally recommended to sow the seeds in a rectangle of at least 4 rows instead of a single row. This pattern will help in proper pollination and provide wind protection as well. The seeds must be directly planted in the soil rather than in trays and pots since corn is difficult to be transplanted. Make sure the seeds are planted one inch deep and at an approximate interval of 18 inches between each row.
Looking after and tending to each seedling individually is of utmost importance. Netting ought to be used to shelter the saplings in case birds try to eat them and the weeds need to be taken care of and removed. Plenty of water must be provided to your plants because high temperatures and lots of water is required when the plant starts blooming and the heat takes dries out the plant quickly. Make sure you also tap the tassels at the top of each stem to assist in germination. When the cobs begin to break out, be sure to give them a good quality fertilizer.
Cobs need to be tested for ripeness before harvested. This is usually carried out when the tassels are a dark brown and the rear part of the sheath is pulled to the check quality of the liquid. If a watery liquid squirts out, it indicates that the ear is still unripe, if the discharge is creamy, it means that the ear is just appropriate for harvesting and if the liquid is thick and solid, it is pointer that you have well crossed the harvesting period. You should cook the corn quickly after you pick it because it is the most ripe then. Remember to follow these tips if you want your corn to taste that good.
