When I took the dead blooms off my mom's (blackish) purple irises, I accidentally removed one that hadn't quite bloomed. Instead of water or clear sap, the liquid was purple. I put it into a bud vase, and I saw today that the water had turned the same purple as the bloom... Why? What's the science behind it (in plain English, please)?
