Apple Cookie Jar

Your Office Is Making You Fat
Could your office be making you fat? It's possible. From lavish business lunches to well-stocked pantries, the workplace is a treasure trove of candies, snacks and sweets. Not forgetting the constant stress that keeps you reaching for that cookie jar. If you're wondering why you can't fit into your favourite suit anymore, then it's time to be mindful when you encounter these common office temptations.
The Business Lunch
There’s a tendency to overeat. These add extra calories to a meal, which cause weight gain. The company may pick up the tab, but you’ll be left with a load of spare change around your gut. The Japanese lead the developed world in low obesity rates, according to research from the International Obesity Taskforce. Make a reservation at a Japanese restaurant. Food is served on small plates and bowls instead of on one big plate. Serving smaller portions may be one of the best secrets for eating healthy and losing weight.
The Canteen
Office canteens usually sell high-calorie and high-fat foods. Fat is a concentrated source of calories. Cutting back reduces calorie intake, according to the Health Promotion Board. Rio de Janeiro State University researchers reported that overweight subjects who ate 300g of apples or pears lost more weight on a low-calorie diet than subjects who didn’t add fruit to their diet.Eat an apple or pear to finish your meal and to add fibre to your diet. Research shows that eating a high-fibre diet (caloric intake being equal) promotes post-meal “satiety”, which means you feel fuller and for longer after your meal.
The Pantry
Popular workplace snacks include chocolates, potato chips, sandwich biscuits and salted nuts – all contain simple carbs and saturated fats. Both are two key contributors to weight gain. Researchers believe that nuts promote satiety and burn more calories during digestion. They’re also cholesterol-free and provide protein, zinc, phosphorus, magnesium, vitamin E and selenium. Stock the stash with quality snacks: dried apricots, figs and raisins, unsalted nuts and seeds. Research from Harvard University and Purdue University found that adding nuts to a calorie-controlled eating plan assists weight loss.
The Vending Machine
A one-can-a-day Coke habit adds 775 calories and 202.5g (58 teaspoons) of sugar every five-day workweek. The American Heart Association recommends 9 teaspoons a day for adult men. Scientists found that subjects who replaced sweetened beverages with water decreased their total caloric intake for the day, without a compensatory increase in the intake of other food or beverages. A soft drink is mainly a solution of sugar and phosphoric acid, which scientists say increases the risk of osteoporosis. If you must have your cola kick, keep it to once a week.

I have one of those jars with the dry ingredients for sugar cookies... what else can i make with it?
I got this as a gift. I don't want to make plain old sugar cookies though. The ingredients listed on the package are: "Wheat flour, Sugar, Salt, Baking Powder, Milk Powder, Natural & Artificial Flavors." (I wonder what the "natural and artificial flavors are, lol) -
Anything I add to make it a little more interesting? (around the house I have cocoa, eggs, pineapple, apple, dutch baked apples, spices... and not much else ![]()
Thanks!
Make snickerdoodles. Make the dough as specified, roll dough into balls, then roll balls into cinnamon-sugar and bake.
Or stir in chocolate chips, nuts, or dried fruits.
Or roll balls of dough in colored sugar, jimmies/sprinkles or cute little decorateive cookie sprinkles and bake.
Or add about ½ cup cocoa to make chocoalte cookies.
